US and UAE Join Forces on Military AI Research in Abu Dhabi

Task Force Talon Synapse, a joint US-Emirati initiative to build artificial intelligence tools for military use, will launch in the coming weeks under US Central Command, which announced the partnership on Tuesday.

The task force will be based in Abu Dhabi, staffed by roughly 20 personnel drawn from both nations with expertise in artificial intelligence, data management, and cybersecurity. Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, described the collaboration in direct terms. “Together, we and our Emirati partners share a strong commitment to adopting AI applications that will foster innovation at speed and scale,” Cooper said. “This will be a historic milestone as we work with one of our most capable regional partners to rapidly deliver evolving AI advancements to our warfighters.”

The concept originated with Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed, Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi and National Security Adviser, who proposed forming an AI and military task force the previous year. Last month, a delegation of AI industry leaders and Emirati defence officials met in the region to work through implementation details, Centcom confirmed.

The UAE has spent years positioning itself as a regional technology hub. It established the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in 2019, an early institutional signal of that ambition. The country also became one of the first in the world to create a dedicated ministerial post for the field, appointing Omar Al Olama as Minister of State for AI, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications.

Recent moves have sharpened that capacity considerably. During President Donald Trump’s visit to the UAE in 2025, both governments announced plans for a 5GW UAE-US AI Campus. Access to advanced Nvidia semiconductors had been a long-standing priority for Abu Dhabi, with those chips deemed essential for AI development. In June, after sustained diplomatic effort, the UAE received its first shipment.

Meanwhile, the broader defence relationship has been formalised in other ways. In July, the United States announced it would “significantly upgrade” the UAE’s export status, citing the country’s defence cooperation and its support during regional tensions with Iran. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached $34.4 billion in the previous year, according to the Office of the US Trade Representative.

Task Force Talon Synapse sits at the intersection of those threads: military necessity, technological investment, and a deepening strategic alignment. By pooling expertise, the two nations aim to compress development timelines for AI capabilities that military planners increasingly treat as essential. Whether the Abu Dhabi-based unit can deliver those capabilities at the speed Cooper envisions remains the test ahead.
