Marwan Bin Shakar had a clear message when explaining why e& UAE chose to rebuild its optical backbone: the region simply cannot wait. “Bandwidth demand is accelerating,” the company’s Chief Technology Officer said, “and we needed infrastructure that could scale with it.”
To meet that demand, e& UAE is deploying a new Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing network across the Middle East, built on Ciena’s optical and software technology. For the businesses, hyperscalers, neoscalers, and data center operators that depend on e& UAE’s connectivity, the upgrade translates directly into faster, more reliable links capable of moving the massive volumes of data that modern digital operations require.
The technical core of the build-out is Ciena’s Reconfigurable Line System and Waveserver platform, running WaveLogic 6 Extreme coherent optics at 1.6 terabits per second. That is a substantial leap in raw capacity. Layered on top is Ciena’s Navigator Network Control Suite, which provides visibility and automation across the entire network, enabling the kind of intelligent, data-driven operations that customers increasingly expect from their connectivity providers.
Bin Shakar was direct about what drove the decision. “We selected Ciena because of its proven leadership in high-capacity optical networking and its ability to deliver scalable, resilient and low-latency infrastructure,” he said. “With Ciena’s technology, we can provide customers across the Middle East with connectivity designed to support their evolving needs.” The deployment extends an existing relationship between the two companies, one already focused on next-generation digital infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates.
Meanwhile, the broader context makes the timing hard to argue with. Across the Middle East, advanced digital applications are multiplying and data-intensive operations are expanding. The operators and enterprises running those services need high-speed connectivity that does not buckle under load.

The new DWDM network is built for scalability and resilience, qualities that matter more as digital services grow more complex. Low latency, high capacity, and the ability to adapt as demand shifts are no longer optional features for a regional operator. They are the baseline.
What remains to be seen is how quickly the region’s appetite for bandwidth will outpace even this upgraded infrastructure, and whether the pace of deployment can stay ahead of the curve.
