Gehry's Final Vision Takes Shape: Abu Dhabi Arts Center Breaks Ground

Posthumous design by legendary architect becomes Abu Dhabi's newest cultural landmark

Frank Gehry’s name is on the blueprints, but the architect died before he could see his final designs rise from the ground. Construction has now begun on Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi, translated as “House of the Arts,” a performing arts center on Saadiyat Island that stands among the last buildings Gehry ever conceived.

The Department of Culture and Tourism commissioned the venue as a global hub for live performance, with an anticipated opening in 2030. Gehry’s design delivers what the institution describes as “a living expression of music and performance,” its undulating, fabric-like exterior cascading across the site. The facade is largely transparent, deliberately designed so that cultural activity inside remains visible to anyone passing outside.

The scale is considerable. A multipurpose performance hall seats more than 2,000 people and includes an orchestra pit accommodating up to 120 musicians. An open-air amphitheatre with 3,500 seats will host large-scale festivals and outdoor performances. A 400-seat studio theatre is designated for experimental and community-focused productions, while a 250-seat jazz venue provides space for more intimate, genre-specific evenings. Across all spaces, the facility offers more than 6,000 seats, each equipped with world-class acoustic systems.

Programming will run 365 days and nights a year, spanning opera, ballet, theatre, and live music at varying scales. The venue is also planned as a platform for long-term artistic residencies, touring partnerships, and co-productions with international arts companies, drawing both established and emerging artists from the region and beyond. Food and beverage outlets, retail spaces, and a rooftop terrace for special events complete the complex.

By contrast with a single-purpose concert hall, the entire facility has been conceived as a highly adaptable space, capable of shifting between intimate productions and large-scale events without losing its character.

The project deepens Gehry’s footprint in Abu Dhabi. He is also designing the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, which will join Dar al Funoon on Saadiyat Island alongside the Louvre Abu Dhabi by Jean Nouvel, the Zayed National Museum by Foster + Partners, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi by Mecanoo, and the Abrahamic Family House by Adjaye Associates. That concentration of institutions has steadily transformed the island into the emirate’s recognized cultural district.

The timing of Dar al Funoon’s development follows Abu Dhabi’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Music in 2021, a recognition that has shaped the city’s growing investment in arts infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Gehry’s broader career is being examined in a retrospective exhibition at the Serralves Museum in Porto, designed by Álvaro Siza. The exhibition runs from June 12 to December 20, 2026, surveying decades of the architect’s influence. Whether Dar al Funoon, opening four years from now, will be seen as the capstone of that legacy remains the question Saadiyat Island will eventually answer.
