What made it particularly jarring was that the film had already finished production and reportedly performed well during test screenings. A finished movie, well-received by audiences, was simply set aside.

Will Forte, who plays lawyer Kevin Avery, described the whiplash of that moment vividly. “I got a call from the producers saying they were ready to show us the movie, and they were so excited, and it was testing really well,” he told the Los Angeles Times. The shelving was announced the very next day. Director Dave Green spoke about the emotional toll of that period, while insisting that hope never fully faded. “There was always a flicker of hope, and I don’t think we ever gave up on that,” he said in the same interview.
